All nine towers

The tower is the only defensive unit against creeps in DesktopTD. It functions to attack and block creeps. Each tower fires at a creep within its fire range (although not every type of tower can hit every type of creep) in order to kill them. Since creeps cannot move through towers (except for flying that move over them), mazes can be built to make the creeps take longer paths.

There are nine types of towers; the pellet, squirt, dart, swarm, frost, bash, ink, snap and boost towers. These differ by price, attack power, range, fire rate, and special attributes.

Special Attributes

Some towers have special attributes, these are;

  • Splash - Upon hitting the creep, it damages all creeps around it. This attribute is especially useful against Group Creeps.
  • Land only - It only attacks land creeps.
  • Air only - It only attacks air creeps.
  • Slow - Creeps that are slowed move at a slower pace for a time.

Types of Towers

Here the nine towers are described in short. For more detailed information, refer to the subpages.

Pellet Tower

The Pellet Tower is the most basic tower. It can attack both ground and air units. Because it is cheap, it is often used to make large mazes so that the creeps are forced to take longer paths. This allows other, stronger towers more time to fire upon the creeps. When fully upgraded it turns into the sniper tower, which sports a huge range and high damage but consequently fires slowly. A special aiming feature is embedded in the sniper tower.

Squirt Tower

The Squirt Tower is an all-rounder tower that can attack both ground and air units. It is most commonly used at the entrance to kill creeps quickly in the early stages of the game, but only to weaken creeps for other, stronger towers to destroy late game. The squirt tower fires quickly, but it has low damage, so it proves inefficient against Dark creeps. The fully upgraded version of the squirt tower is called a Typhoon Tower.

Dart Tower

The Dart Tower is the basic splash tower, but it can only damage ground units. Dart Towers are strong against Group and Spawn creeps because of the splash radius. However, Dart Towers are inefficient against the other creeps when not coupled with frost towers or in good mazes because the creeps are too spread out. Fully upgraded Dart Towers are named "ICBM Tower".

Swarm Tower

The Swarm Tower is the basic anti-air tower and contains a splash component. The swarm tower cannot hit any ground creep, but it destroys flying units easily. It can fire more missiles in each burst as it is upgraded. Multiple missiles can hit the same creep, so it is still extremely effective against flying bosses. A fully upgraded Swarm Tower is called a Storm Tower.

Frost Tower

The Frost Tower is the only tower that can slow creeps. It targets both ground and air creeps and has a splash component. Its main objective is to slow creeps down to allow more time for other towers to deal damage. However, it itself deals an insignificant amount of damage. Fully upgraded Frost Towers are named "Blizzard Towers."

Bash Tower

The Bash Tower is a very short-ranged splash tower that can only damage ground creeps. With each shot, each creep near it accrues damage and may get stunned. As Bash Towers are upgraded, they can fire faster and stun with more frequency, but they do not get more range. The fully upgraded Bash Tower is the "Quake Tower."

Ink Tower

The Ink Tower is a unique tower that can only hit ground creeps. It rapidly fires ink blobs at creeps, which may miss, at a rate that rivals the Squirt Tower. The ink leaves residue on the ground to damage all ground creeps that pass it. It has a unique firing range that resembles a cross, rather than the traditional circle. This severely limits its effectiveness. The Ink Tower has undergone a long history of changes. A fully upgraded Ink Tower is called an "Ink-Blot Tower."
