Desktop Armada is a real time 2D multiplayer flash game on the Casual Collective that can be played by one or two players. The players build ships that sail towards the enemy's base according to predefined routes in order to destroy it. By grouping them - creating an armada - the enemy can be overwhelmed and beaten.

History

Desktop Armada was the third multiplayer game to come to the Casual Collective. (After Multiplayer DTD and Buggle Connect.) It was created by Grrr, and was tested just like Buggle Connect. Only upgraded members could start games, but anyone could join them. Although it did not start out as popular as Buggle did, it was played more often as time went on. Before CC2 was released, it was played by many people all the time. Later Grrr introduced new modes, and rebalanced the ships frequently.

In 2009 the missions from Desktop Armada Missions were added to the game. Before this, Desktop Armada Missions was a separate game...

Gameplay

The purpose of this game is to destroy the opponent's base before one's own is destroyed. The bases are positioned at either end of the map. Each base consists of six ports to build ships from. There are four different ships (patrol boat, destroyer, missile ship, battleship) that can be built. These each cost a different amount of money, depending on the type and level. The ships are then sent towards the other side along predefined routes. When not taken out by enemy ships they will reach the enemy base and start shooting it. Each ship has a strength and weakness that need to be taken advantage of in order to achieve victory. There are also three extra ships (if playing a standard game) that run down the middle every now and then. Whoever destroys his enemy's base first is declared the winner. Beating the other player must be done by grouping ships into armadas so that they work together.

Game Modes

  • No Fog Of War - In this mode, there is no fog of war, so everything the opponent is doing can be seen
  • No Reinforcements - In this mode, there are no reinforcing ships, which mean those three ships won't come down the middle anymore.
  • Admirals -This mode is no longer playable, as it was removed after the creation of CC2. In this mode, you would have a few classes to chose from that affected how your ships would behave in battle.

Desktop Armada 2

There has been some speculation about a sequel to this game, Grrr has mentioned it way back in the past but since then nothing has been said about it, and there hasn't been any confirmation for whether or not it will actually happen. It will be very similar to Desktop Armada, a couple new ships will come with it, such as airships, and you will have more control over your ships. Many ideas of ships have come in by players but none have been taken into consideration yet.
