Desktop Tower Defense 1.9 is a version of the popular tower defense game DesktopTD. The version is no longer playable as it was superseded by DesktopTD Pro at the end of March 2009. It comprised of a single player and a multi player version of the game. As with all DesktopTD versions the goal was to create a maze of towers that killed the creeps that were trying to reach the other end of the map. There were certain creeps and modes specific to this version that are described in the text below.

History

DesktopTD 1.9 was released as the flagship game along with the release of the Casual Collective 2. While containing several new features, it was also plagued by some bugs. Thus it never reached real popularity and was not played as much as the other popular game, Minions. Work started to improve DesktopTD in a new version that was simply named Desktop TD 2.0. This new version mostly fixed the bugs and came with a new sandbox mode. After a while however it was decided that 2.0 too much sounded like a major release and it was renamed to DesktopTD Pro. DesktopTD Pro was launched on the 1st of April as a Beta release and completely replaced DesktopTD 1.9.

Gameplay

The player must build towers on an empty field with openings on the side. Creeps appear from these openings and try to reach to the other end of the board. The player's aim is to stop and kill these creeps by making towers kill them. The towers not only shoot the creeps, but also serve as an obstacle for the creeps. By building a mazelike route, the creeps remain in sight longer and can be fired more easily. Money is earned by killing creeps, which can then be spent on a variety of towers. Each wave consists of a specific type of creeps; these differ in speed, armour and numbers. The creeps come in rounds (waves); 20 creeps per wave (except dark, spawn, and boss). The number of waves depends on what mode is being played, however, 50 is standard.

The multiplayer mode can be played by up to 6 players. All players play their own game and receive the same waves. The aim is to be the last to lose all their 20 lives. The only difference from the single player mode is once one player has killed all the creeps on his screen, the next wave will be sent for every player, thus making it harder for those who had not yet finished the previous round(s).

Modes

There are a variety of game options available.

Normal

20 creeps from 2 entrances; 50 waves.

Hard

20 creeps with 150% health; 2 entrances over 60 waves.

Challenges

  • The 100 - 100 levels of 20 creeps; 2 entrances.
  • Hole Punch - Creeps enter from all 4 the sides and exit in the middle; 50 waves.
  • 15 Towers - Maximum of 15 towers are allowed in play at any one time; 2 entrances, 50 waves.
  • Survivor - Spawn creeps only; 2 entrances, 50 waves.

More Challenges

  • No Splash - No Splash towers are allowed, 2 entrances, 50 waves.
  • Splash Only - Splash towers only. 2 entrances, 50 waves.
  • 5 Min - No more playing after 5 minutes, 2 sides, up to 50 waves.
  • No Selling - No Selling allowed; 2 entrances, 50 waves.

Creeps

There are two versions of every creep. One is a normal wave version, while the other is the boss version of that creep. Here is a list of all the creeps in the game:

  • Normal - Normal creeps are very basic creeps possessing no special power or ability. Tackle them as if they were normal.
  • Immune - Immune creeps are resistant to frost towers and cannot be slowed. Don't try slowing these hot monsters down!
  • Group - Safety in numbers. Well, unless you hit them with splash towers.
  • Fast - Fight speed with speed. Quickly destroy these creeps so they are unable to zip past your defenses.
  • Spawn - These tricky creeps split up when they are destroyed. These "spawnlets" slip through the gaps in your maze, so block them up or you will be in serious trouble!
  • Flyers - This menaces fly over your towers, rendering some of your towers useless against them. Use swarm towers to tackle these.
  • Dark - Evil creeps these are. They null some damage of every shot that hits them, making upgraded towers necessary.
  • Decoy - The reincarnation of spawns. These creeps, when killed, break up into four small, slow moving mini-creeps that draw the attention away from the larger ones.
  • Arrows - These creeps are fast as arrows in straight paths. Don't let them accelerate!
  • Hoppers - These things hop through the gaps in your maze. Keep them from earning a quick get away by tightly closing up all the 0-1 square gaps in the maze!

Towers

In order to counter these creeps, towers must be made to tackle and destroy them. Here is a list of all the towers in the game:
