Casual Collective Radio (CC Radio) is a live streaming broadcast service that allows Casual Collective visitors to listen to audio programming. The DJs are users of the Casual Collective itself, and hail from around the world; listening is free for both unregistered as well as registered members.

Most DJs play music, accompanied by regular voiceovers. Contests are also held occasionally, with DJs or a sponsor purchasing prizes for the winners. While some DJs have a regular show schedule, most only do ad hoc shows.

News about the radio system, radio show schedules, and discussion about the radio may be found in the CC Radio club.

The CC Radio Widget

Widget showing when a DJ plays

CC Radio is only available when a volunteer DJ is online and "casting." When the radio is active, a radio bubble will appear at the top of each Casual Collective page. Clicking this bubble will open the CC Radio widget in a popup -- it will not interrupt a game in progress.

The radio widget, when active, contains the name of the DJ, the show title, the artist and title of the current song, a volume control, and a text area where a user may send feedback to the DJ.

Requests/Suggestions

DJs may, but are not required to, take and fill requests on their shows. If in doubt, one may query the DJ. If a quiz, contest, or set playlist (or theme) is active, though, it is probably an inappropriate time to make a request. If a show's title includes the text "[No Requests]" or the abbreviation "[NR]," no requests or suggestions are intended to be taken for that show's duration. Other abbreviations are also used, and their definitions are available in the CC Radio club.

Due to the nature of the Casual Collective's statutory license for Internet radio (largely defined by the DMCA and rules from Live365.com), requests cannot be played for at least an hour after they are made. Some DJs prefer not to even take/fill these specific song requests. Instead, they prefer to just take and fill band/artist suggestions.

A DJ may have a searchable list of his or her music available. When making a request, it is courteous to first check and see that a DJ has the track requested.

Becoming a DJ

Prospective CC Radio DJs generally go through an application process, which is documented in a sticky thread in the CC Radio club that may be found here http://www.casualcollective.com/#clubs/CC_Radio/Forum/General_Chat/17093.

The DJ application process may be affected by:

  • The applicant's reputation on the Casual Collective
  • The amount of legal music available to the applicant (over 1500 songs usually expected)
  • The likelihood that the show will be different from existing shows

Age is not generally an issue, but being responsible, having a variety of music, and following the CC Radio rules are required. The application process sometimes takes days, and sometimes takes months. Be patient and wait.

Radio Issues

Sometimes, the radio widget may not function as expected. Most often, issues are resolved by reopening the radio widget (sometimes repeatedly), and then waiting for several seconds for the audio buffer to reload. Due to the nature of the Internet, two different listeners may hear the same content a few seconds apart. Sometimes the radio cuts out at around 60 listeners.
